I am currently working on some new nature inspired drawings on vintage ephemera. Using delicate discarded vintage papers and sensitively adding subtle layers of detail using fine liner pen.
"From Across The Sea"
An original pen drawing on vintage map.
Recalling the sheer drama of autumn migration on the east coast, with thousands upon thousands of winter thrushes battling their way to our shores across the North Sea.
If you would like to see these new pieces, they will be available to view at Beverley Open Studios 2024 (see events page for more details)
One of my favourite themes to revisit in my work, are the old folk tales and colloquial names associated with our fabulous British Wildlife.
There is an old Yorkshire tale which tells of how the tiny Goldcrest hitches a lift on a Woodcock across the treacherous North Sea on Autumn migration to the UK, as it was believed they were too tiny to make that crossing nay themselves.... They became known as "Woodcock Pilots" as a result.
These minute birds ( weighing the same as a 20p piece) are in fact very capable of crossing by themselves....but I do love the storytelling!
I have created over 200 of these little original pen drawings on vintage maps to date, and my mice have adventured up and down the British coast line from Cornwall to Scotland!
To be kept up to date when these original and unique drawings are released, please give me a follow on Instagram, as they are often snapped up quickly!
Alternatively drop me a line if you are interested in commissioning a bespoke map drawing of your favourite coastal spot.
Another one of my absolute favourite drawings for several reasons.
1. I was working from one of my own photos taken at a local little owl colony so I can remember that owl and its intense stare very well!
2. I do love little details, and this drawing was chock full of treasured tiny family portraits, and book titles.
3. The title made me chuckle
4. You may not have noticed...but I do love a bird in a snappy hat
Puffins are one of our most beloved UK birds, and I feel super lucky that I get to visit the Bempton Puffins on the East Coast of Yorkshire every year.
This has become on of my favourite paintings, not least because "Satan's Sticky Stuff" aka masking fluid behaved perfectly and allowed be to wash in that beautiful blue sky.
I blotted off the clouds and then worked forward in layers of colour wash and pen and paint detail.
Puffins are so full of character I find them on my desk getting up to tricks pretty regularly! This piece is available as a Limited Edition Giclee Print, and as a greetings card, both through my Etsy Shop.
